School of Medicine and Health Sciences
About the School
Welcome to the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). The School is located at Taurama Campus, adjacent to Papua New Guinea's largest hospital — the Port Moresby General Hospital — providing students with unparalleled access to clinical training environments.
The School has seven Divisions: Clinical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Pathology, Public Health, Health Sciences, Dentistry, and Nursing — each headed by a Chairperson. In Medicine, students are trained to become qualified doctors through the MBBS programme, which uses a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum that promotes self-directed, integrated, and community-oriented learning. Those who choose Health Sciences are equipped with skills to become experts across the diverse spectrum of the health professions.
The Taurama Campus has a full range of modern facilities to train well-qualified health professionals. All health sciences students complete their first-year science foundation studies at the Waigani Campus before progressing to the Taurama Campus for their professional programs.
