Government Assistance (TESAS)

How the Tertiary Education Study Assistance Scheme supports eligible Papua New Guinean students at UPNG.

The Tertiary Education Study Assistance Scheme (TESAS) is the PNG Government's subsidy for citizens studying at an approved tertiary institution, including UPNG. It is administered by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), not by the University directly — UPNG certifies enrolment and passes on the subsidy once it is approved.

Eligibility, in Outline

  • Papua New Guinean citizenship
  • An offer of, or current enrolment in, an approved programme at UPNG
  • Satisfactory academic progress, for continuing students
  • Application through the DHERST TESAS process, in the timeframe it sets

Because TESAS is a government scheme, its rules, subsidy levels and application windows are set by DHERST and can change from year to year. New and continuing students should confirm the current requirements with DHERST directly and with the UPNG Bursary, which handles the University side of the subsidy once it is granted.
