Teaching & Learning

Teaching at UPNG combines rigorous academic foundations with practical application relevant to Papua New Guinea and the wider Pacific region. Our academic programmes are designed to meet national development goals while meeting international standards of excellence.

We use a credit-based curriculum framework where students build knowledge progressively across years of study, supported by laboratories, field work, and industry placements.

Discovery

Research

Research is at the heart of UPNG. Our academic staff and postgraduate students conduct research that addresses real challenges facing Papua New Guinea — from public health and resource economics to linguistics and legal reform. UPNG hosts several dedicated research centres and collaborates with regional and international institutions.

People

Academic Staff

Our academic community includes over 400 lecturers, professors, and researchers drawn from Papua New Guinea and around the world. Staff bring together deep discipline knowledge and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of PNG leaders.

Resources

Library & Resources

The UPNG Library system provides students and staff with access to an extensive collection of print and digital resources, including international academic journals, PNG legal and government publications, and Pacific collections. Research support, referencing workshops, and online databases are available to all enrolled students.

Wellbeing

Student Support

UPNG supports student success through academic counselling, health services, disability support, and a range of student associations and clubs. The Student Services Directorate coordinates welfare services and extracurricular life across the main campus and affiliated campuses.
