Public Lectures & Events

Public lectures, seminars, open days and ceremonies at UPNG are open to anyone. Most are free, and most are held on the Waigani campus.

A University in Public

A national university argues in public. Our schools put on lectures, panels and seminars on the questions the country is actually facing — resource policy, public health, land and customary law, language and climate — and the audience is meant to include people who do not work here.

Dates and venues are published on the University's events calendar as they are confirmed. Anyone may attend; larger lectures ask you to register so we can seat you.

Attending an Event

  1. Find the event

Confirmed lectures, seminars and ceremonies are listed on the University's events calendar with the date, time and venue.

Announcements also go out through the University's news page and social media.

  2. Register if the notice asks you to

Free lectures in the large theatres ask for registration so the venue is not oversubscribed. Registration closes when the room is full.

  3. Getting to campus

Allow time for the security post at the gate. Visitor parking is near the administration buildings, and the campus map shows the way to each venue.

Carry photo identification if you are driving onto campus.

  4. Proposing a lecture or a speaker

Organisations that would like to co-host a public lecture, or to propose a speaker, should write to the Public Relations and Event Management Unit with the topic and the audience you have in mind.

What to Expect

  • Public lectures usually run for an hour, with 20 to 30 minutes of questions afterwards.
  • Entry is free unless the notice states a charge — for example a conference run by an outside body on campus.
  • Lectures are sometimes recorded or photographed for University publications; the notice will say so.
  • Events may be rescheduled at short notice. Check the events calendar on the day if you are travelling in.

Event Enquiries

The Public Relations and Event Management Unit publishes the University's event calendar and handles media and attendance enquiries.
