Industry Engagement

Companies, statutory bodies and development partners come to UPNG for expertise, for contract research, for testing and analysis, and for people to hire. Here is what the University can do and how to commission it.

The University as a Working Partner

UPNG holds concentrations of expertise that exist nowhere else in the country: PNG legal systems and customary land, tropical medicine and public health, marine and terrestrial biodiversity, resource economics and public policy, and the national languages.

That expertise is available to industry — as advice, as commissioned research, as laboratory analysis, or as training designed around a problem. Work is contracted through the University rather than privately with staff, so the organisation gets the University's insurance, quality assurance and continuity.

How to Commission Work

  1. Describe the problem, not the method

Write to the Planning Division with what you need to know or solve, your timeframe and any budget envelope. The University will identify who is best placed to do it.

  2. Meet the academics

A short meeting with the relevant School establishes whether the University can do the work, who would lead it, and whether the timeframe is realistic alongside teaching.

  3. Proposal and quotation

The School prepares a scope of work, a timeline, the team and a fee. Consultancy and contract research carry a University overhead on top of the direct costs.

Ethics approval is required before any work involving human participants begins.

  4. Contract

Work is contracted with the University, not with individual staff. The contract covers deliverables, payment, confidentiality, intellectual property and the right to publish.

  5. Delivery and reporting

The School reports against the agreed milestones and hands over the deliverables. Most clients also ask for a briefing session with their own team.

What to Expect

  • Academic staff carry teaching loads — timelines are set around the semester, and urgent work may not be possible mid-examination period.
  • The University retains the right to publish research findings, with reasonable delay to protect commercially sensitive information.
  • Research involving communities, human participants or protected species requires ethics and permit clearance before work starts.
  • Fees are quoted in kina and include a University overhead that funds laboratories, supervision and administration.
