About the School

The Open College is the open, flexible and distance learning arm of the University of Papua New Guinea. We make a UPNG education accessible to school leavers, working adults, and community members who cannot study on campus full-time — wherever they live across the country.

Through a national network of study centres, online learning and printed course materials, the Open College removes the barriers of distance and schedule so that any motivated student can begin, continue, or return to tertiary study.

What You Can Study

The Open College offers a flexible pathway from school into university and beyond. Our Matriculation and Foundation Studies programs prepare students for degree entry, while certificate and diploma programs build job-ready skills in business, information technology, community development and education.

Selected undergraduate degrees are also available in external mode, allowing students to earn a UPNG qualification while studying from home. Short professional courses and continuing-education units round out our offering for those upgrading their skills.

Where Learning Happens

Learning happens wherever you are. The Open College operates a network of regional study centres equipped with computer labs, library resources and quiet study space, supported by a national online learning platform that hosts lectures, readings and assessments.

Every course is backed by carefully designed study guides — available in both print and digital form — so that students with limited internet access are never left behind. Regular residential schools bring distance learners to campus for intensive face-to-face tutoring and practical work.

Student Life

Our Community

Studying at a distance does not mean studying alone. Each student is supported by dedicated tutors and academic advisers, with provincial study centres acting as local hubs for peer study groups and one-on-one help.

Our student services team assists with enrolment, learning materials, and exam arrangements, while online forums keep the Open College community connected between residential schools. Many of our graduates go on to continue their studies on campus or step straight into the workforce.
