Sports & Recreation Facilities

The University's courts, gymnasium and recreation spaces are used by students first, and by community clubs, schools and workplace teams outside teaching hours.

Sport on Campus

Sport at UPNG runs on two tracks: the University's own clubs and inter-faculty competitions, which have first call on every facility, and community use — school carnivals, church groups, workplace competitions and affiliated clubs — which fills the evenings, weekends and semester breaks.

Community bookings are made through Student Services, which holds the sports calendar, with Physical Facilities Management responsible for the condition of the courts and the buildings.

All facilities are on the Waigani campus unless noted. Student training, inter-faculty fixtures and University competitions take precedence over community bookings.

How to Book

Casual bookings can usually be made a few days out; a season, a carnival or a tournament should be requested at the start of the semester.

  1. Check the sports calendar

Contact Student Services with the facility, the dates and the times you want. Student training and University competitions are already on the calendar and cannot be moved.

  2. Register your group

Community clubs, schools and workplace teams register once, giving a contact person, the number of participants and confirmation that participants are covered for injury.

Schools must nominate a supervising teacher who will be present.

  3. Receive a quotation and confirm

Casual bookings are paid at the Bursary before use. Seasonal bookings are invoiced monthly in advance against a signed user agreement.

  4. Sign in on arrival

Report to the security post at the gate with your booking reference. The facility is opened for you, and equipment held by the University is signed out and back in.

What a Booking Includes

  • Exclusive use of the facility for the session booked
  • Change rooms, toilets and water points
  • Floodlighting where the facility has it, for evening sessions
  • Campus security presence and a manned gate
  • Line marking and net maintenance

Balls, bibs, timing equipment and first aid supplies are not provided — bring your own.

Conditions of Use

  • Student training, inter-faculty fixtures and University competitions take precedence. Community bookings displaced by a University fixture are rescheduled or refunded.
  • Groups provide their own first aid cover and are responsible for the fitness and conduct of their participants.
  • Children under 16 must be supervised by a named adult at all times.
  • Alcohol, betel nut and glass containers are not permitted in the sports precinct.
  • Facilities close at 9:00pm unless a later finish is approved in advance.

Sport and recreation bookings are held by Student Services, which keeps the campus sports calendar.
