Copyright and Intellectual Property

Who owns the material on this site, what you may reproduce without asking, and how to request permission or report a concern.

In force since

You may, free of charge and without writing to us:

  • read, download and print pages for your own private study, research or personal reference;
  • quote short extracts in your own work, in an assignment, a thesis, an article, a news report or a review, provided you attribute them;
  • reproduce material for classroom or lecture use within an educational institution, provided the source is shown;
  • link to any page of this site.

Please attribute in this form: Source: University of Papua New Guinea, upng.ac.pg, accessed [date].

The fair dealing provisions of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act 2000 apply in addition to this permission, and nothing here narrows them.

Write to us before you:

  • republish a page, a document or a substantial part of one, in print or online;
  • use any material for a commercial purpose, including in advertising, a paid publication or a paid course;
  • reproduce photographs, video, illustrations, maps or data sets separately from the page they appear on;
  • modify material, or incorporate it into another work, in a way that changes its meaning;
  • copy the site's structure, design or code.

Permission, when given, is for the use described in your request. It does not transfer copyright and does not extend to a later or different use.

The University crest, logo, wordmarks, the names “University of Papua New Guinea” and “UPNG”, and the names and marks of its Schools and centres are the property of the University. They are not covered by the general permission above.

They may not be used on any publication, product, website, garment, sign or social media account without the written approval of the University, and never in a way that suggests the University endorses, sponsors or is affiliated with something when it does not. Approved suppliers and student bodies are issued the artwork and the conditions of use directly.

Some material on this site belongs to other people and is used with their permission or under licence. This includes photographs by commissioned and volunteer photographers, the logos and marks of partner universities, government agencies and donors, embedded maps, video and social media content served from other platforms, and third-party software components.

Our permission does not extend to that material. Where a page or a caption names a rights holder, ask them. Where you are unsure who owns an item, ask us and we will tell you what we know.

Some material on this site records the knowledge, languages, designs, songs, images and cultural expressions of communities in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. Copyright law is not the only thing that governs its use: customary ownership and community protocols do too, and they can survive the expiry of any copyright term.

Do not reproduce this material outside private study without asking. Write to us and, where the community or the custodian is identified, to them. Where consent for a particular use was not given originally, we will not grant it on their behalf.

If you are a custodian and material here is published in a way your community did not agree to, or an image should not be shown, please tell us. We will take it down while we look into it.

Theses, dissertations, research papers, teaching materials and creative work by students and staff remain the work of their authors, subject to the University's intellectual property policy and to the terms of any research funding or collaboration agreement.

Authors keep their moral rights, including the right to be identified as the author. Where a thesis or paper is made available through the University's library or repository, the licence attached to that item governs its reuse — not this page.

Send your request to the Office of the University Secretary using the details below, and include:

  • the exact material you want to use — page address, document title, image caption;
  • what you want to do with it, where it will appear, and for how long;
  • whether the use is commercial;
  • who you are and how to reach you.

Allow at least ten working days. Requests involving photographs of identifiable people, cultural material or research data usually take longer, because we consult the people concerned.

This document is owned by the Office of the University Secretary and is reviewed annually, or sooner if the way the website collects or uses information changes. It was prepared for the 2026 website and is published pending final endorsement by the University Council. Where it differs from a policy approved by Council or from the University of Papua New Guinea Act, the Act and the Council-approved policy prevail. To suggest a correction, write to the address at the foot of this page.
