Diploma in Dental Technology
Program Overview
The Diploma in Dental Technology (DDT) is a technical training program that prepares dental technologists to fabricate and repair dental prostheses, orthodontic appliances, and other dental devices used by dental practitioners across Papua New Guinea. Students develop practical laboratory skills in crown and bridge work, removable prosthodontics, orthodontic appliance construction, and dental materials science.
Graduates work in hospital and private dental laboratories, supporting dentists and oral health practitioners in delivering dental care throughout PNG.
Entry Requirements
Applicants for the Diploma in Dental Technology must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a Grade 12 certificate with passes in Chemistry, Biology, and at least one other science or technical subject.
- Achieve the University's minimum matriculation GPA.
- Demonstrated aptitude for technical and manual work in a laboratory environment.
- Contact the School of Medicine and Health Sciences directly for current intake and selection criteria.
Career Opportunities
After completing the Diploma in Dental Technology, a one-year residency is required for registration as a qualified dental therapist. Graduates work in provincial hospitals and clinics across Papua New Guinea, often managing dental clinics independently. There is an urgent shortage of dental therapists in PNG, making job prospects excellent. Graduates with strong results in the Diploma may have the opportunity to study for a further two years to obtain the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).
