Bachelor

Bachelor of Medical Imaging Science

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Medical Imaging Science (BMIS) is a four-year undergraduate degree that trains radiographers and medical imaging professionals for practice in hospitals and diagnostic centres across Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. The program integrates clinical practice throughout all years with coursework in medical radiation imaging, radiation science, imaging instrumentation, and specialised imaging modalities.

Students progress from foundational skills in medical radiation and clinical practice in Year 2 through advanced imaging techniques including CT, MRI, digital radiography, and ultrasonography in Years 3 and 4. The Year 4 research project and capstone clinical placements prepare graduates to deliver high-quality diagnostic imaging services in resource-constrained Pacific health environments.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for the Bachelor of Medical Imaging Science must satisfy the following:

  • Successful completion of the Science Foundation Year at UPNG or an equivalent qualification.
  • Passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at Science Foundation level.
  • Achieve the University's minimum matriculation GPA.
  • Applicants must be medically fit and meet occupational health requirements for clinical radiation environments.
  • Mature-age applicants with relevant health sector experience are encouraged to apply.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Imaging Science work as medical imaging technologists (radiographers) in provincial, private, and church-run hospitals across Papua New Guinea. There is a persistent shortage of qualified radiographers in PNG and the Pacific, making employment prospects very strong for graduates. After qualifying and gaining experience, radiographers may apply for specialist training overseas in areas such as CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, or radiation therapy.
