Centre for Human Resource Development

The Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD) leads staff development, skills training, and scholarship administration for UPNG, partnering with Australia Awards and the PNG Department of Personnel Management.

The Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD) is the University’s dedicated division responsible for nurturing the professional growth and capability of UPNG’s most valuable asset — its people. The Centre provides a comprehensive range of services designed to equip staff with the skills, knowledge, and qualifications needed to meet the evolving demands of tertiary education in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.

Our Functions

Staff Development & Training

The Centre designs and coordinates professional development programmes for academic and administrative staff across all faculties and departments. This includes workshops, short courses, mentorship programmes, and in-service training tailored to individual and institutional needs.

Skills Training Programmes

CHRD facilitates targeted skills training to strengthen staff competencies in areas such as leadership and management, digital literacy, teaching and learning methodologies, research skills, and workplace communication.

Scholarship Administration

The Centre administers scholarships and study leave opportunities for eligible UPNG staff, managing the end-to-end process from nominations and applications through to placement and return-of-service obligations.

Scholarships & External Partnerships

CHRD works in close liaison with external scholarship providers and government agencies to facilitate staff access to fully and partially funded postgraduate study opportunities. Key partnerships include:

  • Australia Awards — administering nominations for Australia Awards scholarships for eligible staff pursuing postgraduate study in Australia
  • PNG Department of Personnel Management (DPM) — coordinating scholarship and training opportunities available to UPNG staff through the national public service training framework
  • Other bilateral and multilateral scholarship programmes as they become available

Staff interested in scholarship opportunities are encouraged to contact the Centre early, as nomination deadlines are strictly observed by funding partners.
