Dean's Message

Professor Nakapi Tefuarani
Executive Dean, School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Executive Dean welcomes newly selected students to the university, emphasizing that "This University provides a quality academic environment for learning, friendship, sporting, religious, and other activities."

He describes the School of Medicine and Health Sciences as a large institution responsible for training medical doctors, dentists, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, radiographers, nursing specialists, and postgraduate health professionals. The school serves students from Papua New Guinea, the Pacific Islands, and worldwide, with highly qualified faculty committed to producing quality healthcare professionals.

The Dean stresses that "The public expects high standards of personal and professional work ethics and behaviour from its health professionals." Students must exhibit self-discipline and commitment, with the school refusing to tolerate unprofessional conduct. Teaching occurs through Problem-Based Learning in the MBBS program and traditional methods in other programs, with Port Moresby General Hospital serving as a teaching facility.

He encourages students that they can overcome professional training challenges and become future leaders equipped to serve rural and urban communities. Performance in the Science Foundation Year Course determines eligibility for medical study.

Finally, Professor Tefuarani addresses COVID-19 vaccination, stating "all of our practical students have been vaccinated" and urging others to "show your maturity and community responsibility and get vaccinated."
