Research

Research in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences explores human experience, culture, language, and society across Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. Our scholars preserve and advance knowledge that is central to PNG's cultural heritage and contemporary social development.

Research Themes

Our researchers work across the humanities and social sciences, combining fieldwork, archival study, and critical analysis to illuminate the diversity of Papua New Guinean society.

  • PNG history, archaeology, and cultural heritage
  • Linguistics and the documentation of PNG languages
  • Anthropology, sociology, and social change
  • Literature, philosophy, and the creative arts
  • Gender, development, and community studies

Postgraduate Research

The School supervises Masters and PhD candidates pursuing original research in their chosen discipline. Higher degree students contribute to active research collectives and have opportunities to undertake fieldwork across PNG's provinces.

Collections & Collaboration

Our research draws on rare manuscripts, historical documents, and language collections important to PNG's cultural heritage. We maintain partnerships with cultural institutions and museums across the Pacific region.
