Dean's Message

Professor Leo Marai
Executive Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Welcome to The University of Papua New Guinea's School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The School encompasses ten academic strands including Anthropology, Sociology, Archaeology, Creative Arts, Geography, History, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Information and Communication Science, Journalism and Public Relations, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Literature, English Communication, Political Science, Psychology, and Social Work. The institution also houses the Melanesia and Pacific Studies research center and the Melanesian Institute of Arts and Communication.

The School's primary mission focuses on developing skilled professionals in social sciences and humanities, advancing knowledge through research, and advising public and private sector stakeholders.

Academic facilities span multiple campus buildings, with main offices in Kuri Dom, Psychology staff in Arts 2, and Creative Arts divisions distributed across Ullie Beier Building and South Campus.

The university promotes independent critical thinking through rigorous coursework. Students face evaluation via examinations, assessments, fieldwork, and research projects.

"An automatic progression GPA from Semester 1 and Semester 2 in the first year is 1.75 and above." First-year students scoring 1.50-1.75 must appeal to the Executive Dean, while those below 1.50 face automatic exclusion. Subsequently, students require a minimum 2.0 GPA for progression.

The message encourages students to engage responsibly with university life, respect institutional property, and demonstrate maturity as community members while pursuing "blended learning" in the "new normal."
