Dean's Message

Professor Simon Saulei
Executive Dean, School of Natural and Physical Sciences

The dean welcomes students to UPNG's School of Natural and Physical Sciences, emphasizing that "SNPS builds knowledge, and provides the necessary training to prepare students who will contribute meaningfully to nation building."

He encourages students to study diligently, noting that scientific professionals will drive national development. The message highlights PNG's development sectors—including energy, agriculture, mining, and ICT—all requiring trained specialists.

The school offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across six disciplines: biological sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science and geography, mathematics/statistics/computer science, and physics. Two new programs have been introduced: the Bachelor of Sustainable Development and the Comprehensive Hazard and Risk Management degree.

Professor Saulei emphasizes active learning, stating that "Lecturers cannot cover everything in any given subject area." He encourages students to be proactive, utilize faculty support, and participate in student societies to enhance their university experience.

He concludes by expressing the school's commitment to accompanying students on their academic journey, assuring that "Exciting careers await those who complete a Science Degree!"
