Dean's Message
Professor Sam Kaipu
Executive Dean, School of Law
Professor Kaipu welcomes first-year students to the University of Papua New Guinea's School of Law. He acknowledges that students arrive from diverse backgrounds and circumstances, some leaving their provinces for the first time.
The Dean explains that students pursue law degrees for various reasons—personal advancement, family expectations, or professional necessity. However, he emphasizes that genuine success requires more than intelligence. He states: "There is no substitute for hard work. Students must be committed to engaging in hard work and sacrifice."
Kaipu identifies key obstacles to academic success, including "laziness, complacency, absence, loss of focus, procrastination, and lack of commitment." He advises students to develop proper study habits, maintain positive peer relationships, and sometimes defer personal decisions like parenthood until after completing their studies.
The message stresses that transformation begins at the university and requires embracing the right attitudes and behaviors. He directs students to consult with administrative staff about university policies and the Law School's bylaws.
Finally, Kaipu emphasizes health responsibilities, warning against life-threatening habits and the risks of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and COVID-19. He notes the School maintains non-smoking and non-chewing policies. Concluding spiritually, he advises: "Seek and live in the peace of God with everyone around you."
